The end of year concert given on the eve of Grand Day was a very memorable event marked by its variety and the high standard of individual performers.

carol services and concert. This year, the P7
Space prevents the mention of individuals but there was some excellent group playing this year including a fine performance of Apache by Tom Bruce, David Walker and Gordon Cook. The windband continued to provide a framework for the whole concert and a number of movie themes were played including Raiders of the lost Ark, John Dunbar's theme from Dances with Wolves (complete with authentic 'horses hooves' nobly played by Jennie Holmes) and Jurassic Park. Along the way there was another delightful setting of Sunset in which the soloist was David McDougall, and the concert drew to a rousing conclusion with Kiss the Girl.

The music competition took place as usual and Katrina Watson won the P7/S1 category. The S2/3 category was won by Ciara Watson and the senior category by Lynsey McAulay.

Following the success of David McDougall's solo concert last year, it was decided that a similar event would take place in November, this time for five advanced players: Lynsey McAulay, David McDougall, Amy Morton, Ciara Watson and Laura Wylie. It was a superb concert which lasted about an hour.

The end of the Christmas term saw the usual

carol service and concert. This year, the P7 Minstrels quite stole the show with their deft footwork for a new Kings' carol Oh, what a journey we've been on!

In most of the above, the school's Windband has been a central feature. They have added much to the Parade Sunday services and, in the recent Old Victorians' Parade Service, they gave a moving performance of Evening Hymn and last Post for the dedication of the new memorial in the chapel. My thanks go to all members of the band who have loyally rehearsed throughout the year for the concerts and services.

Just a few days before going to press, three pupils peformed in the Glasgow Music Festival. They were: Laura Wylie (descant recorder) who gained 86%, Ciara Watson (flute) with 83% and David McDougall (trumpet) whose mark of 88% enabled him to win the Brass Solos A class.

Lastly, thanks are due to the team of peripatetic instrumental teachers who add so much to the musical life of the school through their dedication.
