Fund-raising for Charity

The past year has seen great success for this hobby group which has again attracted many enthusiastic pupils of all ages. Non-uniform days and frequent baking sessions have both contributed to the raising of £1,162.70 for various charities since lost easter.

Our non-uniform day in the summer term raised money for Edinburgh Sick Children's Hospital, with pupils dressing in shorts, T-shirts and 'shades'. In October, pupils contributed to 'Jeans for Genes' and the Smaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Appeal. This year we were able to send 65 packed shoeboxes, which were gratefully received by needy children in Russia. I would like to thank parents and children who contributed so well to this appeal.

Before Christmas a non-uniform day raised £264 for Children in Need. This was followed in March by a LookeyLikey Day, where pupils
dressed as someone they thought they looked like. The pupils are to be congratulated in their innovative ideas. The £273 raised was

donated to Multiple Sclerosis Scotland.

Since October the bakers have gathered enthusiastically to produce fairy cakes, chocolate crispies and chocolate marshmallows which were rapidly snapped up by ever-hungry pupils. Our profit from cake baking since just before Christmas reached the total of £167.25 and the bakers opted to send this money to Cancer Research.

In our fund-raising of last year we supported the charity, Sightsavers. We had asked the charity to use part of the money donated to set up an eye screening camp and were delighted to hear that a camp in the name of Queen Victoria School was held in the Tamil Nadu district of Southern India. As a result of the camp, 92 people were examined and 1 were referred to hospital for sightsaving operations.

Our pupils have given generously to our appeals, contributed well to non-uniform days and enthusiastically eaten the cakes produced by our slick teams of bakers. Congratulations are due to all.

JMC's MultiGym Hobby
A committed bunch of fanatics who give up their Tuesday lunchtimes to work their bodies.

The mixture of pupils who come along is fantastic. It ranges from the 'MultiGym Beasts' to those who simply want to tone up. What is splendid is that we also have both boys and girls attending!

The hobby is something that continues throughout the whole school year and, as well as keeping me fit, keeps me up to date with what's happening on the music scene. The "sounds" brought along prove to be the inspiration that drives us all on ... as well as the packed lunches of course!

Thanks for your commitment!

Needlecraft
This year's needlecraft hoby had a strong turnout, although sadly lacking the boys we have had in previous years. Quite a few of the girls were beginners, but after some tuition from Miss Taylor they soon picked it up. Also many of the girls who came last year returned.

Every Monday evening we would meet in Wavell Common Room to chat and sew for the hour or so we were there. The sewing kits we worked on were varied as we specified the type we wanted and Miss Taylor would try to get it for us. One time we went to the needlecraft shop in Bridge of Allan to pick out kits ourselves.

All in all a very successful and enjoyable hobby.

Pottery
The Tuesday night hobby was attended mainly by 3rd year girls. On Wednesdays two different groups took part on a rota basis in order to cater for as many P7 potters as possible.

The products ranged in scale and form — from simple animal thumb pots to more adventures constructions using a variety of modelling and building techniques. Hopefully, when they are finally glazed, the efforts and enthusiasm of the potters will be well rewarded.
