Cross Country

Cross country showed a marked improvement over the past winter, so it was disappointing that our runners were not able to perform on the bigger stage. Due to the spread of Foot and Mouth, the Scottish schools cross country championships were cancelled. In particular we had expected Leanne Bridgeman and David Honeyman to perform well and looked forward to some good team results.

In February we hosted a very successful afternoon of competitive races when six schools and over 200 runners took part. It was good to see so many youngsters reveling in tanking round the playing fields, dashing through Wavell Wood and leaping the burn with gusto. David won the U-14 boys age group and Leanne was second in the U-14 girls race. At St Aloysius these results were reversed with Leanne first and David second in their respective races. David also had the fastest lap for his age-group at the Fettes relays.

In what was to become a strange season for sport, we lost another fixture at Strathallan due to the heavy, drifting snow. It is very rare

for one, let alone two fixtures to be cancelled since cross country runners are renowned for their "when the going gets tough the tough get going" attitude.

Other runners who performed well for their teams were Vivian Moonan, Carly McDonald, Katrina Leith, Jamie Lee Read, Sarah Fennell, Cameron Gaff, Andrew Martin, Ryan Flaherty, Kieran Broadbelt, Jamie Motherwell, Stuart Mooney, Alistair Page, David Thorpe, John Campbell, Michael Brown, Craig Richardson and Kris Reid. Sarah Fennell is to be commended for never missing a training session.

In the present climate of criticising children for

being couch-potatoes, more interested in computer games than their fitness, it is good to see healthy numbers showing an interest in cross country and taking part in training particularly the P7s.

As well as supporting the U-14 teams, they also competed in the Forth Volley Primary Championships at Stirling University (a new initiative) with great success. Emma Reid had a superb win and won the team prize along with Karen Harrower and Nina Richardson.
The boys' team of Chris Martin, Hamish McArthur and Chris Milne finished third.

The Future looks bright.
