THE VICTORIAN

QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL

Patron - H.R.H. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, K.G., K.T., O.M.. G.B.E.

Queen Victoria School was founded in 1906 by public subscription throughout Scotland, and among the Services in general and Scottish Regiments in Particular, as a National Memorial to Queen Victoria and to Scotsmen who lost their lives in the South African War.

It was officially opened by King Edward VII in 1908 and has functioned continuously as a School for the sons of Servicemen since 1909; nearly 4,000 boys have passed through the School in that time. There are places for 270 boys.

Admission to the School is open to boys between the ages of 9  and 12 at date of admission, who are the sons of serving or former Scottish Servicemen or Service women of the regular forces. Service in a Scottish Regiment qualifies, even if the parent is not of Scottish birth. The preferred age of entry is between 10 and 11. The sons of officers are only eligible if the father (or mother) has served at least four years in the ranks as a regular.

The educational policy is in conformity with the practice of Scottish schools, leading to Ordinary and Higher Grades of the Scottish Certificate of Education, an SC SYS, though the School does not bind itself to keep all boys after they have reached the legal leaving age. Boys leave QVS bound for Universities, Colleges, commerce and industry in many areas. Every encouragement is given to boys who wish to enter the Services but no pressure is put on them to do so.

Tuition and board are free. All Service clothing and equipment is issued free. A charge of £60 per term is made to defray in part the cost of providing a full range of non military clothing and for haircutting. Parents are also expected to provide pocket money at laid down scales, to pay an annual subscription towards the upkeep of the School minibuses, to subscribe to the School magazine, a personal accident insurance scheme and a sports subscription.

All inquiries and correspondence should be addressed to THE COMMANDANT, Queen Victoria School. Dunblane. Perthshire FK150JY.
