RECORD BREAKERS!
WAVELL HOUSE SWIMMING 1973-74

"Who would true valour see, let him come hither," for here, in an unpretentious pool, a mere nineteen metres long, and amid a swirling mass of light green chemical-flavoured liquid, dynamic feats of endurance and courage have been displayed. In a environment of howling draughts, winter air temperatures and Arctic waters, a battle for survival "at sea" has continued throughout the two Winter terms. Undaunted by the booming, mind-bending voice echoing through the frigid air, with such taunts as "Don't stand there shivering; get in !" and "Not long now, folks," these once blue bodies, now fully recovered, can stand proudly and regard through hero's eyes their significant achievements.
Now miners' strikes, power cuts, pool restrictions, heating economies and winter gales over, the emphasis in training has turned from survival to speed, with some startling results. Who would have thought that those so slow and lethargic at rising bell could move so fast through an alien medium ? Who could have thought that one notable figure not renowned for keeping his mouth closed for any great length of time, could have done so, long enough to swim a breathtaking two and a half lengths? This fifty-metre competition swim
must surely introduce a new award for "Fish of the Year"; definitely a gala performance !
Great commendation must go to all those who put so much energy, enthusiasm and determination into their swimming, be it during survival courses and tests, speed tests, house standard tests, the gala, or leisure time pursuit. Special mention must be made though of those who entered school in September as non-swimmers, and due to Mr. Reid's patient and experienced instruction, now take full part in our swimming activities as though the pool were their natural habitat.
Of course, not all reached the standard of style, power or endurance they were aiming for. They need not be discouraged, but rather set themselves with greater determination, and regular training, to gain their desired awards next time, in addition to the rewards of pleasure and good health they have already gained. Considerable improvement in the general standard of swimming has been accomplished and is relfected in the awards and results listed below. It is my hope that next year, all those concerned will move on to even greater things. They will certainly be given all the encouragement they require.
