FAREWELL TO THE R.A.E.C.

On the 17th June 1973 an event of historic importance took place at the School when H.M. Commissioners, and all sections of the School community, with deep regret made their formal farewell to the RAEC, and expressed their thanks and appreciation for the continuous services of members of the Corps on the School academic staff between 1920 and 1973, when the last representatives, Lt.-Col. A. K. Evans, BA and Captain J. S.  Hendry, MA were withdrawn.
The Director of the RAEC, Major-General K. Hall, OBE, BA, attended as the guest of honour and about seventy serving members of the RAEC and wives, including two former Headmasters and many former members of the QVS staff were also present. H.M. Commissioners were represented by General Sir Gordon MacMillan, Admiral Sir Angus Cunninghame Graham, Air Vice-Marshall MacGregor and Mr. Crichton-Miller.

The day began with a commemorative Chapel Service, followed by the Director taking the Salute at the March Past. At a pre-lunch Reception the Director was presented with inscribed pictures on behalf of H.M. Commissioners and the School. Following a buffet luncheon, the events of the day were concluded by a Highland Dancing Display and a Retreat by the Pipe Band. The visiting party then dispersed, some to go home, others to revisit old familiar places around the School or look up old friends on the staff. Although with sad overtones, it was a happy and successful day. The last RAEC officers at the School presented a handsome Lectern Bible to the Chapel. The contribution of the RAEC, and their close association over more than fifty years with the School, is also being commemorated by a Memorial Window in the Chapel which it is expected will be unveiled during the Christmas Term 1974.
