Obituaries
Commandant's Note
Mr. Monaghan died in June 1972, just after the Victorian of that year had gone to press. Unfortunately owing to an oversight, his obituary testimonial was omitted from the June 1973 issue. Although it is now two years since the death of John Monaghan, it is not fitting that his passing should remain unrecorded in the School Magazine, or that the esteem in which he was held by his colleagues on the staff, among whom he is well remembered, should remain publicly unexpressed. The "obituary" which should have been published in 1973 is therefore included below.

Mr. John Monaghan
In the last issue of The Victorian in June 1972, mention was made of the retirement, through illness, of Mr. Monaghan, and of his having received the Imperial Service Medal just after his retirement, when, although a sick man, he returned with members of his family to receive his medal at an informal presentation attended by all his fellow-members of staff.
Sadly, John Monaghan did not live for many months after getting his medal and he died in June last year just after the magazine had gone to press. He had been Handyman at the school since 1940, and so was one of the most senior members of the administrative staff when he retired. A fine craftsman in his trade, perhaps his chief characteristic was his never-failing willingness to turn his hand to anything that needed doing, for the school or for an individual in or out of hours. Up on the roof putting in new slates, clearing a blocked drain, or plastering a wall, if the job had to be done it was done as quickly as he could do it, and always well.
The bravery and cheerfulness with which he sustained a long and painful illness impressed everyone who went to see him. Although it is a year since his death, all the staff must very clearly retain the memory of a friendly colleague, a good craftsman, and a fine man. Mrs. Monaghan, we are pleased to be able to say, still works for the school and looks greatly refreshed after her well-deserved and much-needed holiday in South Africa, visiting her son and grandchildren.
Mr. G. Crockett
We are also sorry to record the recent death of Mr. G. Crockett, who was a member of the Administrative Staff from 1958 to 1968. The School was represented at the funeral in Dunblane and our sympathy is expressed to his wife and sons.
No. 513. James Mather McKendrick
James Mather McKendrick died on 8th November 1973 in Glasgow. The funeral was held under private arrangements. To Mrs. McKendrick and family, we extend our deepest symthpay.
