WAVELL HOUSE
A combination of poor health and adverse weather conditions during the Easter Term resulted in very few games being played. If the football pitches were not covered in snow they were frozen solid and the boys obtained most of their exercise from sliding and sledging. Snow battles raged in Wavell Wood and this aspect of winter was enjoyed by all. One winter hazard which was not so pleasant, however, was the influenza epidemic that swept through the House during the latter part of the Winter Term. Only a dozen or so boys escaped it and at one time there were over thirty boys in bed at the same time. As usual everyone miraculously managed to recover in time for the Easter holiday.
So far the Summer Term has been a hectic one. All the sports competitions which were postponed have been run off in quick succession and the term has been a grand festival of boxing, swimming, cross-country, football and athletics. So far cricket has taken second place but with the temperatures during the first half of the term mostly hovering around freezing point, perhaps it has been a good thing.
Wavell Wood comes into its own as the days lengthen and there is more time to play outside in the evenings. This rough piece of ground containing trees and a stream is a marvellous playground for small boys and can be turned into whatever the imagination wills it to be. Normally it is a battlefield and opposing armies can be seen manoeuvring there, equipped with the Wavell House issue wooden rifle, Mark I. Early summer is also the term when animal collecting begins. Class-room aquariums are stocked with tadpoles and all sorts of carnivorous water creatures are caught and bottled. In a previous year we reared a young rook which, unfortunately, died, just before it was ready to fly off, owing to an excess of tinned cat food which was all it could be induced to eat. This year so far we have discovered six young ducklings which we were able to return to a rather agitated mother.
At the end of the term the House will see many changes. Captain Bull has left us to take up an appointment as Head of a primary school in the borders and Mr T. M. Wright will be leaving us at the
