competition was again judged by Capt. Woodhouse who gave his comments on each photograph. J. Campbell won the senior Competition and J. Sayer the junior. Despite the high standard of the competition, however, only three out of seven novices passed their proficiency test. To counter the dying enthusiasm towards the end of the year cheap films were purchased in bulk, and a wider variety is now stocked and sold at reduced prices. We are all looking forward to a good end to the year with our exhibition on Grand Day. J. Campbell.
PIPE BAND I cannot begin as usual by saying that we have made a great improvement this year because we have not. We reached, four years ago, the standard of a third grade band and since then each competition has told the same story! Bad drumming and unsteady pipe blowing. People expect no more from us as a boy's band though they do not realise that we have by far the finest facilities in Scotland and an instructor who has taken many bands to the top of grade one. I feel we will progress no farther until pipers play their pipes a little in their own time or someone invents automatic bagpipes. We were futher handicapped by the sudden departure of our leading drummer this term, though H. Shannon is quickly learning to fill this position. Our first engagement this term was to John Players & Sons (Stirling) Gala Day on 23rd May. We were invited back to Blackford Highland Games this year for the centenery year. After Grand Day we depart for a weekend in Beaconsfield to play at the 50th anniversary of the RAEC. On 27th June we are making another attempt to win 3rd grade at the World Championships held this year at Aberdeen. Pipe Major Instructor: J. MacKenzie. Drum Major Instructor: A. Morrison. ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY At present the Society is undertaking a survey of some limestone workings and the associated limekilns at Cambusbarron, near Stirling. Although the workings only closed in the early thirties the project is of some importance as there are still people alive who worked in the mine and the kilns. No map was made of the underground workings and it is hoped to produce a trace for use with the 6" map. The project is being undertaken at the request of Dr Mackie of Stirling University and is an example of a new branch of archaeology called Industrial Archaeology whose main concern is the recording of the whereabouts and methods of working of local industries over the ages. The underground survey gang comprises the following members of IMC: R. K. Holmes, R. J. McMurdo, R. MacVicar, W. Murray, and L. Ruder-ham with Captain J. F. Gardner performing on the theodolite. These workings are cut into a 6' strata of limestone and the entrance is a level out of which flows a stream. The survey gang have had to chain through over quarter of a mile of this level containing water to a depth of 1-2' which takes one's breath away when one first steps into it. This level has been called the "Long Paddle". The NCB has lent us helmets and lamps. The helmets are very necessary as incautious movements frequently result in massive collisions between heads and the low lying roof in certain parts. The cookhouse very kindly provide us with tea which is very welcome on emerging into the fresh air after the Long Paddle out.
