WAVELL HOUSE DRILL COMPETITION
This year's junior drill competition was carried out on a squally day with frequent and heavy rain showers. The usual inspection on the field was replaced by an inspection in the Play Hall, after which the three dormitories marched past on a rather sodden field whenever there was a break in the showers. The dormitory commanders found the last minute change of routine a little disconcerting but they adjusted themselves to the new situation very well and everyone did his best. lan Robertson worked very hard with Lynedoch Dormitory who won the competition. Inspecting Officers : The Commandant, the Headmaster.
Result :
First—Lynedoch Dormitory. Section Commander : I. A. Robertson. Second—Moore Dormitory. Section Commander : J. S. Murdoch. Third—Abercromby Dormitory. Section Commander : B. R. Murton.
THE HOUSE COMPETITIONS
The inter-house drill competition on 5th July, with Major Gordon, Royal Highland Fusiliers, and R.S.M. Hamilton (father of an Old Boy and of a present Wavell House boy) kindly acting as judges, was won by Trenchard House, with Cunningham second, and Haig third. This was just the result required to keep the House championship contest at fever heat. It left Haig just a point ahead of Trenchard. On 6th July, Trenchard won the junior league decider with Cunningham, and that put Trenchard 14 points ahead of Haig. On the same evening Haig and Trenchard senior cricket teams played the key match of the competition. Trenchard were thought to be rather the stronger side. But Dougald Robertson of Haig had just been declared fit to play games again, and he celebrated his return in a fashion that demonstrated how much the School XI had lost by his absence in the rest of the season. Haig batted first, and Robertson hit the bowling all round the field. With one wicket to fall, he had made

96 out of 125, and when he faced the bowling, the excited crowd was poised to cheer his century. It looked to be there when he pulled the ball high towards the boundary ; but instead D. Nealon of Trenchard made a spectacular running catch low down and just inside the boundary. Robertson then went on to do most of the work of dismissing Trenchard for 57. He took 8 wickets for 22, and added the final touch with a hat-trick for the last three wickets. On 7th July, Trenchard beat Cunningham by 7 wickets. The last house match, between Haig and Cunningham is to be played on 8th July. At this point our last copy goes off to the printer, but if weather permits the match to be played on the day fixed, we shall be able to add the result below. If Haig win or tie this match, they will get the house championship by 0.5 point. If Cunningham should win, then the championship goes to Trenchard by 1.5 points.
Late Result
Cunningham House 54, Haig House 40 The vital wicket was: D. Robertson l.b.w. bowled Curl 4. All Houses are equal in senior cricket, and Trenchard win the House Cricket Shield and the House Championship.
