WAVELL HOUSE INTER-DORMITORY COMPETITIONS
Cross Country Running
The championship course was further extended this year to include another water jump and it is now sufficiently interesting to test the most fervent enthusiast. The inter-dormitory championship was based on a major/minor competition for the first time, thus giving twice as many boys an active interest in the destination of the trophy.
The major championship was won by A. J. Martin (A) in a very good time of 18 minutes 15.8 seconds. P. B. Cooper (A) held off a challenge by N. Houston (L) to take second place. Abercromby followed this up with B. Murton (5), M. F. Greig (6), G. Sheret (7), C. Duckett (10), I. Cruickshank (13), S. Young (15), D. Macdonald (22) and Garry McNally (23) to win the major championship with 104 points to Lynedoch's 179 and Moore's 186. B. Goldie (4) and J. Shannon (11) ran well for Lynedoch ; Moore's leading runners were J. Murdoch (8) and C. Hynd (9).
The first boy home in the minor championship was G. Kent of Lynedoch in 19 minutes 10.6 seconds. He was closely followed by K. Ross and B. Webb, both of Moore, in 2nd and 3rd places. J. W. S. Brown (A), Jas. Robertson (L), E. McKay (L) and S. Grant (M) keenly contested the next four places. Lynedoch, with a total of 112 points, won easily from Abercromby with 162 points, and Moore with 199 points.
Abercromby thus won the trophy with a total of 266 points to Lynedoch's 291 points.
Swimming
Though, at the beginning of the year, there were 26 non-swimmers, 65 of the house's 84 managed to enter for the swimming sports. Thanks are due to Mr Reid for his successful non-swimmers' classes.
Until the relays Abercromby had a big lead over Lynedoch. This position was quickly reversed in these last three events because of Lynedoch's strong team work. Moore finished a poor third with 184, to Lynedoch's 334 and Abercromby's 32.
Boxing
From an entry, for the house, of 77 contestants Abercromby emerged with 8 finalists to Moore's 7 and Lynedoch's 5. Moore had collected 16 good losers' points en route to the finals, while Abercromby and Lynedoch each gained 13. The issue was in doubt until the last bout, but Moore finally won the trophy, with 38 points to Abercromby's 35. Lynedoch had the consolation of having the Martin trophy for the best stylist won by N. Houston.
Football
Of the three major matches two were won by Abercromby and the other by Moore. The winners got 5 trophy points while Moore and Lynedoch got 3 and 1 respectively.
