CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING

This is a sport calling for guts and stamina, in which Queen Victoria School still has plenty of room for improvement. It is unpopular with many boys mainly because it is what we fall back on when the field is not fit for games. So it is associated with wet days, and is regarded by many as a kind of fatigue. A few boys who are old enough to know better have prided themselves on making no effort at these runs, taking as long as they can to go round, and thinking themselves awfully clever when they try to cut the course. Happily there are also young runners who have shown their courage and determination on the cross-country course. It is worth notice that most of the leading middle-distance athletes in Britain were cross-country runners first and have built themselves up on this kind of running.

An encouraging feature of this year's races was that 26 boys reached the standard in the junior section of the secondary school ; and it is certainly worth mentioning that the first three home in the senior race were the three Monitors in charge of the Houses.
