Life Saving and Personal Survival

Since the " Victorian " last came out, boys of the School have gained many awards for life-saving and personal survival. The tests for awards of the Royal Life-Saving Society have been taken here regularly for many years. The tests of proficiency in personal survival, for awards of the Amateur Swimming Association, are fairly new. There are bronze, silver, and gold awards ; and the silver and gold are accepted as qualifications for the Physical Fitness section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, at the corresponding stages. These two are tough tests. For the gold award a boy takes his test wearing a long-sleeved shirt, trousers, pants, a long-sleeved pullover, and stockings or socks. He has to jump in from a height of not less than ten feet, swim 100 yards in less than four minutes, tread water for 1 minute in a vertical position with hands clasped behind his back, tread

water for four minutes in a vertical position, and undress in the water. He has to make a float from clothing and use it to float for 5 minutes without use of arms or legs, except when re-inflating the clothing, if necessary. He has to swim 1,000 yards, surface-diving during the swim 12 times head first and 12 times feet first, to pass each time through a hoop the top of which is at least three feet below the suface, and this has to be done in less than 30 minutes. Finally he has to climb out of deep water, the level of which must be at least nine inches below the landing place, without the use of steps or assistance. Nobody is going to win any of these awards who is not a proficient and confident swimmer. We can fairly say that the long list of successes by Q.V.S. boys is an indication of a high standard of swimming in the School, not of easiness in the tests. The best proof of Mr Reid's success in coaching swimmers here is the widespread keenness in the School. The boys who have passed these personal survival tests have worked away by themselves to reach the standard required. A remarkable fact is that the boys who have passed for the gold award are fourteen year-olds and fifteen year-olds, except for Derrick Wrenn, who is only thirteen.  They have not been specially coached, but told what they have to do and left to make themselves capable. That they have done so is a great credit to themselves, as well as reflection of the high quality of Mr Reid's work.
