The Standards Competition
A few years ago the system of standards, for athletics and cross-country running, was introduced, the idea being that average performers who made the effort necessary to work themselves up to the required standards in the various events could score points for their houses. Boys have opportunities of trying for these standards in athletics throughout the summer term, and can get them in school cross-country races in the Easter term. When the total number of standards gained by each house has been added up, a score for the house is got by dividing the number of boys in each house into the number of standards gained by that house. This is necessary because some inequality in numbers always develops in the course of the School year. With competition between the two leading houses being as close as it was this year, the number of standards gained became a very important factor in deciding the house championship. Haig narrowly got the first place for standards, with Cunningham second, and Trenchard third.
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD SCHEME
For the bronze series of the award we started with 38 candidates. The number is now down to 20 and likely to go lower. This is a disappointing state of affairs, and says little for the staying-power of those concerned. Persistence in working for the achievement of a defined aim is possibly the main quality that the scheme is intended to encourage, and it is a pity that so many of our original candidates should have given up at so early a stage. The real failures are those who give up, not those who find and some part of the tests beyond their capacity.
In the silver series there is a better picture. We started with 9 candidates and will finish with 7. The one candidate for the gold series was D. C. K. Robertson, who unfortunately was eliminated because of illness.
The silver series candidates have been using their initiative and have captured the spirit of the scheme. K. Boyne, D. Jagger, and C. Lannen have completed the series and are recommended for the award. Jagger and Lannen, and J. S. Grigor heard that three of the School's A.C.F. officers were assessing gold series expeditions at Cultybraggan during the Easter holiday. They knew that they would not be able to attend the A.C.F. camp, where expeditions are normally done, because their parents had air passages already booked for their summer holiday overseas. So they got themselves included on the gold expedition course. Grigor was taken ill one day out, and had to retire from the expedition. This was on doctor's advice, not of his own inclination. He is determined to rejoin next year and win this award. The other two did very well. They did the gold course for a silver award. K. Boyne had already qualified for the award in an expedition done at the Outward Bound School in the Easter term.
