The remaining five are to be congratulated on their efforts, though there were signs of insufficient preparation. The standard was a bit lower than we had a few years ago, particularly in the vintage year of 1961. The candidates are not entirely to blame. When Scottish Certificate examinations were held at the end of the Easter term, there was plenty of time for Senior boys to prepare for this competition during the earlier weeks of the summer term. Now that the examinations go on well into May, the remainder of the summer term is packed with school activities, and readings and speeches do not get the fairly leisurely preparation, with tape-recordings helping rehearsal, that was once possible. The great thing still is that both audience and candidates find the occasion enjoyable.
The Senior Monitor, D. Robertson was an admirable chairman, assisted by other senior boys as ushers. The judges were the Headmaster, Major Wright, and Mr Jamieson. They had to confer for a longer time than usual because the competition was so close ; and anyway it is a difficult job to compare the merits of serious and humorous speeches and readings. M. Scoggins was adjudged the winner with C. McLaughlin second and D. Marshall third. M. Owens was handicapped to some extent by unexpected lateness in getting back from receiving his Gold Award at Holyroodhouse, not even having time to change out of his ceremonial dress.
ARMY CADET FORCE
The main events recently have been the examinations for Certificate A, Parts 1 and 2. All the candidates passed : 37 in Part 1 and 33 in Part 2. We are now engaged in classification tests at Whitestone Range. These have produced some bruised shoulders and deaf ears, but remarkably few good shots amongthecadets having their first experience of the .303 range. Unfortunately the time allotted to us on the range has been cut from three months to one, and this does not give the cadets time to become used to the conditions and improve their shooting. The annual camp this year is at Ness Battery, Stromness, where we look forward to meeting our Orcadian friends again. Camp is obligatory for cadets unless they have good reason for not attending. Some have to miss it because of flight bookings that need to be made well in advance. But some seem to have got indulgent parents to write asking for them to be excused camp. This defeats the object of our A.C.P. training, for camp is the climax of the year's |
training. Our nominal roll is 95 strong, but only 60 cadets are attending camp. 35 are missing a fortnight of good healthy training.
Our athletic team again represented Perthshire in the A.C.F. championships at Redford Barracks on 12th June. This year, instead of two classes (under 16 years and 16 to 19), we had three, namely 14-15, 15-17, and 17-19. In the last group we could put in only two boys, as two of our athletes were on an outward bound course and two others in hospital. However, we won the 14-15 class and the 15-17 class.
