Drum Notes

Since our last edition of Drum Notes many changes have taken place in the Drum Store.

We welcome our new Drum-Major, Mr D. Legg, from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

As soon as we came back at Christmas we were away to Murrayfield for the first of three visits. The band came back a day early from our Easter holidays in order to play at the Scotland v. England match at Hampden Park. We have also played twice at Gleneagles Hotel, and later this term we are playing a.t Stirling Castle.

The Drumming and Bugling competitions are being run off in a short time and it will be very hard to say who will win.

At the end of this term we shall lose two side drummers—B. C'arcary and D. Nisbet. Also, we shall lose bass drummer J. Docherty. We have boys already prepared to step into these places.

As bass drummer we will have A. Leitch, who came from the orchestra, and as side drummers T. O'Connor and D. Mclnnes. We wish them the best of luck, and hope that they will maintain the high standard which is shown at present.

Judges—Major P. A. Feargus (Royal Scots) and Drum-Major D. P. Legg, Q.V.S. (late Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders). Results:—

Senior Drummer—J. Fee. Tenor Drummer— J. McDonald. Bugling—J. McDonald. Champion Drummer—J. McDonald.

Dancing Notes

This term has not seen many engagements for the dancers. Last term we had an engagement at the Hydro which we enjoyed immensely.
During this term Senior Boy Murphy and Junior Boy Watters entered for the Alloa Highland Games. Both failed to gain a position in the first three but they gained good places and were a credit to the School.
Next term most of the junior dancers, including Watters, enter the senior school, and we hope it will be a most successful term under the management of Mr Mortimer.
At the end of the term we say farewell to Thomson, MciNlcol, Ken-, and the champion dancer. Murphy. We wish them luck in their future careers.
The annual Dancing Competition was held in the Playhall. We were most surprised to find that the judges—Major C'osgrove, R.A.E.C., and Colour Sergeant Oliver, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders—are both Old Boys of Queen Victoria School. Major Cosgrove himself is no mean exponent of Highland dancing and was champion dancer when at School. Major Ccsgrove was also champion of Scottish Command. These two Old Victorians did not realise that the other was an Old Boy of the School until they had been chatting for some moments, as they had not met when at School. Results:—

Class "A" — Sword Dance — J. Murphy.
Class "A" — Fling — A. Milne.
Class "B" — Sword Dance — 1 W. Scott.
Class "B" — Fling — J. Waiters.

Inter-House Competition—Haig House.

Best all-round dancer—J. Murphy.

We take this opportunity of saying good-bye to J. Murphy, who has achieved considerable success as a dancer, having been champion dancer for the last four years. We wish him, and F. Thomson, who is also leaving, all success in the future.

Army Cadet Force

Since Christmas training has been directed towards the Certificate "A" Tests. On 19th and 23rd April the Part 1 Examination was held at the School. Of 48 Cadets eligible to sit, five were absent sick and 39 of the remaining 43 passed.
On 10th and llth May the Part II Examination was held at Buddon Camp. Of the 39 Cadets eligible, one was at Cranwell for interview, one was sick, and 30 of the remaining 37 passed.

Thus the present position is that of the 87 Cadets on the strength, 30 hold Part II and 48 Part I, leaving only nine who have not yet qualifleld, five of these having been prevented from sitting the examination through sickness.

On 14th May a visit to Leuchars R.A.F. Station was arranged by Sqdn. Ldr. Gray. A.F.C., R.A.F., and 35 of the senior Cadets had a most enjoyable day, being shown Meteors, Hunters, briefing room, control tower, and radio and radar equipment room. As on most visits to Service establishments, we found a member of the family, the Flight Sgt. in charge of the radio radar equipment room being an old boy of the School.

On 28th May we had a visit from the R.N. and R.M. recruiting staff from Glasgow and saw two interesting films on naval life, ashore, afloat and in the air.
