THE VICTORIAN

Bandmaster Felix H. Lax, B.E.M.

Mr Lax has recently retired after a long period of faithful service to the School. Coming from the King's Own Scottish Borderers, after 21 years' service, he joined the Staff as Bandmaster in 1931.
During most of his time here, Mr Lax had no less than 120 boys under instruction on one or two of the many and varied instruments which comprise the Military Band, and also for a few years he was coaching a string orchestra.
As, except for one short period, he had no
assistant, he tackled this large responsibility single-handed, and with creditable results. The skill and patience which he has lavished on many a fractious pupil over nearly 26 years must indeed be a record in itself. He was a strict disciplinarian, yet kindly and considerate on every occasion, showing care and interest far beyond the realms of mere duty; spare time given over to assisting the backward and advancing the more proficient; tedious .hours spent copying out band parts for special occasions. Besides his work with the Band, he had his regular share in the routine duties of the School.
Although Mr Lax has now retired, his interest in Victorians old and new has not waned. The regular stream of correspondence and visits he receives from so many Old Boys at his new flat in Dunblane is a tribute to the high esteem in which he is held.
We miss his erect figure and sparkling eye, but perhaps above all, his fine influence, and we extend to his wife and himself our best wishes for a long and happy retirement.

Miss K. Macpherson

We regret to announce the retirement at the
end of this session of Miss Macpherson, the Hospital Matron.
Miss Macpherson joined the staff in January, 1941. For three years she was Assistant matron and Home Sister at the School of Domestic Science, Atholl Crescent, before being appointed, in 1937, Matron of the Church of Scotland Home for Missionaries' Children. At the outbreak of the last war the home had to be closed and, in consequence, the School was fortunate in obtaining her services.
The atmosphere of quiet efficiency, spotless cleanliness, firm discipline, has been a feature of the hospital throughout Miss Macpherson's term of office. We wish her a long and happy retirement .

Mr D. B. Henderson and
Mr C. Fergusson

We announce the retirement of Mr D. B. Henderson, the school tailor, who joined the staff in 1943, and Mr Colin Pergusson, one of the two indoor pioneers, who has been with us for twenty-five years.
We extend to them both our sincere wishes for a long and happy retirement.
