THE VICTORIAN

THE COMMISSIONERS

Previous Page

Since the appearance of the last issue of the Magazine, the School has suffered a series of grievous losses in the deaths of two of Her Majesty's Commissioners and the retiral'; of two others.
It was with deep regret that we heard of the
death of Major General Sir Archibald B. Ritchie, K.B.E., C.B., C.M.G., one of our most senior Commissioners, who died on the 10th July, 1955, at his home in Newbury after a short illness. General Ritchie a Seaforth Highlander through out his service had a distinguished record in the first World War and commanded the 51st Highland Division from 1923-1927. He had the honour of being appointed Colonel of his Regiment. A fine cricketer and all-round sportsman, he played for Scotland against the Australians in 1910. General Ritchie joined the Board of Commissioners on the 12th of January, 1928, and always took a most lively interest in the School, coming north from Berkshire to attend the meetings of the Board of Commissioners. His great experience through his long association with the School made his advice of particular value to his fellow members, and his cheerful and loveable personality will be greatly missed.
In December, 1955, Mr J. H. Bruce Lockhart accepted the invitation of Her Majesty's Commissioners to join the Board, and on the 27th February, 1956, he attended his first meeting. The news of his death on June 4th, 1956, was received with deep regret. One of the greatest authorities in Scotland on Boarding School education having held with great distinction the appointments of Headmaster at Carglefield and Sedbergh his invaluable advice, based on so many years of experience, was eagerly anticipated. In his death the School undoubtedly lost a most valuable adviser.
Our most sincere sympathy is extended to all the relatives and friends of these distinguished Commissioners whose loss we so deeply deplore.
The following members of the Board of Commissioners tendered their resignations in the period under review.
Air Vice Marshal Sir Charles A. H. Longcroft, K.C.B., C.M.G, D.S.O., A.F.C., joined the Board on the 22nd of October, 1945, being appointed by the Air Ministry to represent that body.
Air Marshal Longcroft had a long and distinguished career in the R.A.F. and was the first Commandant of the R.A.F. College, Cranwell. The Air Marshal submitted his resignation to the Board on the 13th July, 1955, on the advice of his doctors.
Brigadier General Sir Norman A. Orr-Ewing, Bt., C.B., D.S.O., A.D.C., D.L., joined the Board in April, 1926. An officer of

the Scots Guards, he served with distinction in Europe and Africa. His name will be perpetuated in that famous pipe march, "Major Norman Orr-Ewing."
The loss of these two Commissioners to the Board after nearly ten and thirty years of service respectively in the interests of the School is greatly regretted.
We most sincerely welcome to the Board General Sir Gordon H. A. MacMillan of Mac
Millan, K.C.B., K.C.V.O., C.B.E., D.S.O., M,C., D.L. General MacMillan is no newcomer to the Board as he had sat as its Chairman throughout his tour of duty as General Officer Commanding in Chief Scottish Command.
Rear Admiral J. H. F. Crombie, C.B., D.S.O., and Air Vice Marshal R. L. Ragg, C.B., C.B.E., A.F.C., have both joined the Board. Both have a knowledge of the School as Visiting Commissioners, and both have carried out the duties of Inspecting Officer on Grand Day, the former as Flag Officer, Scotland, the latter as Senior Air Force Officer, Scotland. Air Vice Marshal Ragg is the R.A.F. appointment in place of Air Vice Marshal Longcroft. We offer all three a most hearty welcome.
